FWIW, my parents make that joke and there was never any contemplation that they would have ANY inheritance to give us. (For comparison, one of our set of grandparents died with $10K in the bank; the other died with about $47 -- depending on whether the social security check for the month had cleared or not!)
Yep, people of a certain age joke about this all the time among themselves. It doesn't mean anything, they're just having fun.
I wish my dad would do this. He's being so careful with his money in hopes of leaving something to his kids. I tell him all the time that he worked so hard for so long that he should spend money on himself and enjoy himself now that he has the time. I'd much rather have him around for a very long time than his money.
