I think they are just making a light hearted joke.

Yes, but with my husband's family it crosses into boasting about what they have, what they're buying. It 's the same conversation about money money money.

"Well, I guess if you're spending it, it's not our inheritance is it?"

I've seen this phrase written on tee shirts and bumper stickers. It's just a joke.

Lighten up and say "Good thing we weren't counting on getting any!"

FWIW, my parents make that joke and there was never any contemplation that they would have ANY inheritance to give us. (For comparison, one of our set of grandparents died with $10K in the bank; the other died with about $47 -- depending on whether the social security check for the month had cleared or not!)

Yep, people of a certain age joke about this all the time among themselves. It doesn't mean anything, they're just having fun.

I wish my dad would do this. He's being so careful with his money in hopes of leaving something to his kids. I tell him all the time that he worked so hard for so long that he should spend money on himself and enjoy himself now that he has the time. I'd much rather have him around for a very long time than his money.

"Was there ever any doubt?" ~insert light laughter~

"Glad you are enjoying it!"

My parents say it too. It isn't malicious, it's a joke. I tell them "good, I'm glad your enjoying it". I know very little about how much if any inheritance there is, and that's fine with me. It's their money. If some is left over, cool. If not, I have a 401k and IRAs and work pretty hard.

We don't care about their money, but they keep saying "Here goes your inheritance." It's annoying and obnoxious. Spend the money but stop talking about how you're dropping loads of cash when we're just living our lives.
. Bleeding money -- your choice of words indicate this is an issue for you

I guess it's the persistence of this sentiment that gets to me. We get the joke, now stop saying it every time we see you. Then again, maybe they're just mentally losing it.

LOL - my dad says stuff like this all the time. He also jokes about their retirement place in AZ (which is a double-wide modular home) being my "legacy" because he knows that makes me roll my eyes.

I just think it's funny. Ideally I'll inherit something someday, but that means he'd have to die first, which would make me very sad.

My FIL is like this. He loves to talk about how flush he is (we are in that crappy daycare paying small child financial hell). I think it's fine. I don't love it but I don't begrudge him either. You can't take it with you and you earned it. So spend on, old cat.

My ILs say this too! They also joke about how they are going to run out of money and come to live with us. My FIL is a compulsive shopper who spends all day at the dollar store buying crap and MIL makes the inheritance joke about it. I don't care what he buys with his own money, as long as he doesn't actually expect us to give him more!

+1

I strongly doubt they would get it, but you would, and that is all that matters.

Say "Terrific!" and privately think "You old crone".

Drinking game when you get home.
