That being said, try to get tickets a few days prior, you may be surprised that seats will open up as time gets closer.
Check out #lovethelawn on Facebook - there was a recent discussion thread and literally hundreds of people were talking about how they prefer the lawn for the experience. But, it really is a matter of taste. As for the rain, Wolf Trap regulars have good strategies for dealing with rain - one popular move is the "burrito" where you bring a tarp or the like, and wrap it behind and over your head.
This group should also know about Wolf Trap's Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods, which is a smaller theatre behind the big one. They have shows at 10:30 am in June and July, and there are some fantastic Kindie acts, folk, dance, puppets, etc. Tickets are just $8 and $10, and you can have a picnic afterwards.
