Check out #lovethelawn on Facebook - there was a recent discussion thread and literally hundreds of people were talking about how they prefer the lawn for the experience. But, it really is a matter of taste. As for the rain, Wolf Trap regulars have good strategies for dealing with rain - one popular move is the "burrito" where you bring a tarp or the like, and wrap it behind and over your head.

This group should also know about Wolf Trap's Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods, which is a smaller theatre behind the big one. They have shows at 10:30 am in June and July, and there are some fantastic Kindie acts, folk, dance, puppets, etc. Tickets are just $8 and $10, and you can have a picnic afterwards. http://www.wolftrap.org/tickets/ctitw

How do seats open up? The site said no refunds. So if seats are sold, aren't they gone for good? I am thinking of going on Stubhub just to get some actual seats, but of course that open will be expensive.

Potential groups that don't use all the seats. Last year, I landed a ticket the day of for Huey Lewis and it was the 2nd row from the stage, and it was a crowded show. Granted, one ticket is easier than 4.

+1. I purchased 2 front row seats to Huey Lewis 2 hours before showtime. It was a great show!

There are many ways that tickets become available after a show is technically sold out: Every touring artist has a stash of ticket holds that they use for friends, tour managers, press, etc.; if they haven't used them, they may release for sale close to the show date. It's true that Wolf Trap doesn't offer refunds, but exchanges between shows are allowed (see http://www.wolftrap.org/visit/frequently-asked-questions.aspx). And it's true what the PP said about Groups as well as sponsors turning back tickets. Doesn't happen all the time and for every show, but it's pretty common.

I've done the lawn seating at Wolftrap a number of times with mixed results. The land rush with the other sooners is the the worst part of it. I just buy regular tickets now.
