I got it in my 20s from a long-term BF. Had two partners after (second one became my husband) and both were totally cool about it and not freaked out. I got lucky that these guys were mature enough to handle it. And I didn't infect either one (12 years and counting with DH). I maybe get a mild outbreak once every 5 years now when I'm worn down, but it's been such a non issue in my life that I wish I could've had a glimpse of that when I first got infected and freaked out. I kind of feel like how your potential partner reacts is a good test for them anyway. You won't waste your time on some ignorant fool.

Somebody disclosed it to me when we were dating. I was very unsure what to do, and worried, and I called a friend for advice. One of the things she told me which has stayed with me was that the person who discloses to you early on that they have herpes is a person who is looking out for you. The way to repay trust is not to run for the hills, it's to proceed with caution. I ended up going forward with the relationship (slowly) and never caught it. (It's not as contagious as you might think).
