Except Brent --which is the subject of this thread -- doesn't feed into SH. In any event, we as a Brent family aspire to something much better than viable. It's not a matter of snobbery. It's about pursuing what we perceive as the best options for our children in the short and long term. Those do not include SH, EH or Jefferson for MS. We are not alone in our thinking. Don't pass judgement on our choices and we won't pass judgement on yours.

Asking this question in a vacuum is kind of pointless. What are your alternatives? If you must be on the Hill, and private is not an option, then sure, Brent is your best public school option. If you are not tied to the Hill, then Brent is not going to be your best option (but still a good one). You also need to look toward the future. The Hill has no viable middle schools, so your rolling the dice on getting into a charter.

As with any school, there are some kids who present behavioral challenges on a regular basis. Among other things, Brent will be hiring a Behavior Technician later this year to help teachers address issues caused by a few kids in terms of any classroom disruptions. Overall, Brent is a very positive learning environment and serious bullying or fights are quite out of the norm. No doubt that having only a dozen or so 5th Graders on campus helps in this regard.

Don"t lose sight of the fact that Brent is still 40 percent OOB and that any long-term capacity issues can be dealt with by redrawing boundaries. The Maples aren't that far off from delivery.

The Brent principal decided to move from Mandarin to Spanish next year for a variety of reasons which have been explained to parents. Some parents were unhappy with the process and the principal more generally, in part, because he originally hoped to offer Latin imstruction only to grades 2-5. This would have permitted reallocation about $50,000 in funds to hire additional staff to support the new strategic plan. DCPS turned down the request and language instruction will continue to be offered to all grades. Sorry, a handful of unhappy parents does not equate to turmoil.
