I think that making fun of what a loving grandparent calls their grandchild smacks of low class.

My family is from the PNW, and my mom refers to my daughter as her grandbaby when she is talking about her (she uses her name or a nickname when speaking to her). I always called my grandparents grandma and grandpa. I don't understand why this is so grating--"grandchild" or "granddaughter" sounds kind of formal, and their relationship is very warm and affectionate.

OP, could you please clarify what name you wished your MIL used? Do you want her to call your DC by his/her name, or just prefer her to use "grandchild?"

FWIW, I cannot stand parents who call their DCs "bud" -- like, hey, bud!

I am with you OP. I can't stand it when someone uses your son, your daughter, your husband. It feels so cold and impersonal when people don't use your loved ones name. In grandma's case, she may just be thrilled to have a grandchild....so using "grand baby" makes her feel special and connected.

Are you for real, OP? Your poor MIL.

I'll bet she walks all over your newly installed eggshell floor with her shoes on too.

What an awful, awful woman.

This is truly baffling to me. My son and DIL have a child. I call him my grandbaby because that's what he is. What am I missing?

I don't understand. He's her grand baby. What else is she supposed to call him? Grandson? Seems like the same thing.

Grandchild or grandson/granddaughter . But it is a very silly thing to get worked up about. I'm sorry you're ashamed your inlaws might appear to others as hicks.

Yes, the southern term is "grand baby" much like she may be called "grand ma." Why is this so disturbing to you?

At least you don't have to call her husband grand Pappy.
