What is "soft rock", and why is it safer for 16-year-olds than the alternatives?
Because of the crowd it attracts. Carly Simon or James Taylor attracts different people than heavy metal, for example.

A 16-year-old is going to the 9:30 club to see Carly Simon (who is 70) or James Taylor (who is 68)? I mean, I'm all in favor of appreciating the classics, but I'd find it very depressing if the Baby Boomers were defining music for yet a third generation.
