My 15 year old has been to shows at the Filmore in Silver Spring. I'd be totally fine with him going to 9:30 club.

Ha Yes!! Safari Club!!! I was going there at 14. I went to 9th & V (present day 9:30 club) for raves at 16. So, I guess c'est la vie for a teen in DC.

And of course I recognize Ian Mackaye, I owned lots of dischord record colored vinyls, etc.

+1. The 9:30 club. A rite of passage for all Washingtonians! They've been stamping underage hands since the Stone Age. The "new" 9:30 is much more civilized than the old one -- they don't have that weird stone dungeon room with the metal grate in the basement!

What is "soft rock", and why is it safer for 16-year-olds than the alternatives?

Because of the crowd it attracts. Carly Simon or James Taylor attracts different people than heavy metal, for example.

Sure b/c you know "rock and rock" is bad.

A 16-year-old is going to the 9:30 club to see Carly Simon (who is 70) or James Taylor (who is 68)? I mean, I'm all in favor of appreciating the classics, but I'd find it very depressing if the Baby Boomers were defining music for yet a third generation.

I just used them as examples. She is seeing Kodaline.
