To the parent whose child zoned out in SAT prep - that's the instructor's fault. They need to keep it engaging

This sounds great. Having gone through the stress of it last year with our son at another private, I wish we had this policy.

Nothing. DC's private school already provides such services.

At the private schools, one of the big writing project in junior year is a personal essay. Since it is done for class, there is lots of teaching/reading on what makes a good personal essay, multiple drafts, careful review by the English teachers, and time to polish. Most students learn not to write about the paid service trip to Costa Rica where they re-painted a school/orphanage. Not only does the process take care of the essay for the students, it gives the teachers a lot more personal detail and color to include in teacher recommendations. Lots of programs for parents to understand the process, mostly focused on not stressing out the students.

If that isn't sufficient, the parents pretty much demand intensive one-on-one attention, rather than a boot camp. So the parents with the greatest expectations and financial wherewithal don't really need your service. So your market is primarily public and religious school parents who might be a little more price sensitive, despite the DC area college hysteria.

How do these schools incorporate college counseling into the curriculum?
A kid I knew at Field said there was time set aside for college apps etc including days early in September/October for completing apps with help and college visits

So that part is a non issue in my mind, except for the fact that potential clients may also doubt that it can be done.. Something to think about. More of a formula can go into the supplemental essays than you would think, as a pp mentioned.

Also, I completely understand that this is a niche business and most people have no use for it. Was just curious about the correct price range for those who WOULD be interested. I think the main draw of a service like mine, for most parents, is the ability to completely wash your hands of the process. I assure you, you will not be able to do that with $200 essay camp. However, many parents WANT to be involved and that is great! I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone that they need my services. I'm just here to support the ones that don't want to be involved, or want to give their kids an extra leg up, and are interested in doing so at a cheaper price point.

I really appreciate all of the thoughts, both positive and negative!

Do you consult for students who are GT/LD?

Yes, I do! That said, I would prefer not to gives contact info or name out on this site as I am not trying to use it to solicit business. I hope you understand!

I don't doubt that kids can write essays in that period of time, the question is should they. And how healthy is it for them to be doing it in a group.

Sounds like drive through college counseling to me.

As the parent of an about-to-be high school graduate, I promise you that any time beyond the first 2 hours/day would be dead time. OK, maybe DC would refocus for the last hour.
There are weekend 6 hr/day SAT prep classes which were a waste for DC, who would zone out after 3 hrs, guaranteed
