Many folks consider 5-6 part of the evening, technically correct or not.

We had our main meal early - around 2 - and maybe a snack at 7 or 8 pm.

Not all European countries run the same way.

DH is in IT. Generally home by 5:45 or 6. He takes a long time looking for the jobs he's had that are within 15 min commute and allow him flexibility to take time for sick days, etc. It is a priority for him. Are there trade offs? Yes. At one time he took a job that didn't fulfill him. He also does work often from home after the kids are in bed for an hour. He loves that he gets to spend time with the kids and I love feeling that I have a partner in raising the kids. I also WOH full time.

DH is a CTO. He's off between 5 and 530 and it takes him about 30 min to get home.

structural engineer = 40 hr weeks. Off at 5pm
Construction management = 55-60 hrs a week. Leaves at 6am comes back at 7pm. For just $30k more than what he used to get. Late 30s. It really depends on what you do.
My brother worked for one of the big consulting companies, BCG. He put in 70-80 hr weeks in his 20s. That was the norm.

6:30 is pretty standard. My DH and I leave work now at 5p because my daycare closes at 6pm. We both end up working later, post bedtime because we leave a bit earlier than our colleagues.

PP you were responding to. Were you tired yesterday that you felt the need to respond like this? Insulting someone reflexively says more about you than about me.

In my circle, some spouses travel 50% of the time, or arrive home at 10pm, or go to work at 6am... one enterprising father gets home by dinner time, then works in his home office until the wee hours of the morning. These are the years they need to prove themselves and they all make (or will get promoted to) at least 300K or far more.
They are all in different "business" fields. Start-ups and 500 companies have quite different atmospheres.

6-6:30 pm sounds like a standard time to arrive home. IMO.

I'm a fed too and that's when I get home.

How much do you work that you need a nanny for kids that are 12 and 16?

My husband is a financial planner, and most days he is home by 6:30-6:45. He has a 30-minute commute, and he usually starts work some time between 8:15-8:45. He usually does more work at home in the evenings.

I work in finance and DH is a consultant.

I usually leave work at 4:45, pick up both kids, and am home by 5:30. DH gets home by 6:30.

Depending on how busy I am at work, I may have to log back into work after the kids go to bed at 8. Same for DH.

We both normally get home between 6-6:30, but we both have occasional nights of working later (7-9 pm). We just have to coordinate those in advance so that at least one of us can get out in time to pick up the kids!

I also work from home in the evening pretty often (few times a week), after the kids are in bed.

I grew up as PP mentioned. We live our lives that way now. It's rare dinner happens in our house before 8.

My official office hours are 9:00 to 6:00, but very few people leave by 6:00. In my industry, if you're leaving right at 6:00, you're not going to advance in your career.

FWIW, when I was young, I was always amazed at the spouses (then they were all wives) who complained about the time their husbands got home. They never seemed to complain about the big house in Chevy Chase or the nice vacations or the private schools their kids went to. I have no problem with folks choosing to make less money to spend time with their family, but it's very rare to have both.
