Wow, it sounds like you've thought of every possible scenario!

The chances of an armed home invasion are slim to none for the average citizen. If you involved in a gang or are a drug dealer, or some other person who would be expected to have hoards of valuables locked up in the house, then I see how it would be something to be concerned about.

Most burglars are looking for easy targets (when people aren't home, unlocked doors or left open garage doors). Most people are not going to forcibly break into your home and hold you at gunpoint just to steal your TV/Computers/cash in the house/jewelry. It seems particularly unlikely if you've got an alarm system or a guard animal. The criminals could easily find another house that doesn't have those things that would be an easier target.

The argument is NOT that guns make you 100% guaranteed, always and forever infallibly safe.

Our crime rates seem awfully high compared to countries with stricter gun laws. Even if you pull out crime by blacks, which is sometimes used as the excuse, the crime rate is still very high, especially homicide.

As long as criminals have guns (and they get them illegally, by the way), I am happy we own a gun and at least have a chance to adequately defend ourselves in the event some nut bag decides to break into our house.
That doesn’t mean there are not risks. Guns, nor people are infallible.

Gun free Georgis Tech has had 11 armed robberies on campus this past year. One in an academic building. Why? Because the moment you step off campus, you can carry. Criminals aren't stupid - they come right to where they know even the permit owning students can't carry.
