Anything over 80 is reckless driving in the commonwealth!

As well it should be.

Exactly. I'm no Virginia fan, but 80 is not an appropriate driving speed-- ever.

Said the speeding jerk.

You get what you get.

So you are telling me you NEVER speed? You're probably the asshole who drives 5 mph under the speed limit in the left lane.

Dude. You are the one with the reckless driving charge.

IKR?

The law targets assholes who go over 80mph and endanger the lives of everyone else on the road. Such creatures are not welcome in this state. Hope they throw the book at you.

Hi op. A year ago I got pulled over in North Carolina for a very similar speeding ticket. I think I was going 81 when I should have been going 65 or 70. I had to show up for court in the small town in NC where I got pulled over. They reduced the speed on my ticket and I had to pay a fine and court costs. It ended up being $200-$300. It was my first ticket ever and I was pretty upset. Major inconvenience too, bc like you, the place I had to go for court was like 4 hours away from my house. I didn't get a lawyer, and I went in hoping they'd drop it since I'd never had a single ticket or anything like that in my life, but nope. I had to pay. I also got a crapload of letters from lawyers, but I threw them all in the fire when I went camping that summer. I also felt it was some kind of racket and no way in hell am I paying a lawyer to take care of it for me.

Lesson learned for me though, while I never have been one to speed or run through red lights, I'm a lot less distracted, and a lot more careful these days. Especially when I'm out of state! Good luck op, and big hugs!

+1

They definitely sound like those assholes who sit in the left lane just to "show everyone a lesson." They are actually the ones who are going to cause an accident one day!

OP, yes, it's a racket. Definitely get a lawyer. Probably needs to be a local one (part of the racket).

Anonymous wrote:Over 80 is automatic reckless. Doesn't matter that it's "only 13 over." OP you sound in denial. This is serious in Virginia. Get a lawyer.

That's just a dumb comment. How can I be in denial when i know it happened. I was there. I was responding to someone who said "15mph over is reckless driving" that's all.

To everyone else, thanks for the advice. I'm going to search other threads for lawyer recommendations. This law targets people who are from out of state and are just driving through, which does not make the state very welcoming.

So? The speed limit was posted at 70 mph, not 83 mph. You were lucky you didn't go to jail.

Here's a funny thought.... Maybe just stay under the speed limit?

Greensville county? There are always cops lying in wait there.

This happened to me, OP. I paid a lawyer $750 to go to court for me and take care of it. I also took a driving course on my lawyer's recommendation before the court date. It was all expunged from my record.
