We went last year for spring break. We drove down and back, both in one day. Our kids were 14 and 9 at the time.

I saw mostly flights with a connection for about $360+. There was one non-stop flight. So if you had to settle for a connection flight, you are probably looking at 5 hours of travel at $2,000 (flights, cab or parking, rental car). I'd rather drive 8.5 hours at $280 and get some quality time with the kids.

We live in CHS area and we did it the first trip here and kids were miserable. Never again for us. Without kids DH and I would be totally fine.

We left Alexandria on the last Sat in June last summer...6:30 a.m. departure. No trouble all the way to Jacksonville. We also returned from Kissimmee (leaving at 7:00 a.m.) on the Sat. -- July 5th-- arriving in Alexandria at 8:30 p.m. No trouble at all. You don't need to drive at crazy nighttime hours. Just leave a
early, avoid Sunday night returns, and hope for no major shutdowns (which can happen at any time).

No way! Traffic was free and clear but for a lane closure on 95 in NC, but it only held us back about 5 min. Leave by 7:00 a.m. and you are fine.

We're in GA now and did the drive in a day last Friday. Left at 6:20 am from Arlington and were in St. Simons by 5:50. Stopped a few times, but hit no traffic.

We have done it plenty of times (DH is from Charleston). Agree with all the others to leave as early as possible. From DC to Richmond is by far the worst part.
