OP here. I think we are going to forgo the private school and go with the charter. It is a nice school, and I am sure many families are happy there, but it does not seem worth it for $35K when this charter will give an equally good education for free. We may have to reassess at middle school, but I am hoping DCI will be on more solid footing. The tech focus does not worry me too much. Some of these private schools could use tech a little more in my opinion.

It totally depends on your situation and how much you value the language vs a great private school with (likely) more experienced teachers. Also, if you live in Upper NW, your kid will probably have more friends nearby at the private (assuming its a nearby private).
In terms of DCI, the people I know whose kids are a year or two away from DCI are pretty nervous and are thinking about privates. It's not at its permanent location yet and given that that location is Walter Reed, permanent location may never pan out. Then there is the use of technology issue. We have a kid going into PK4 at a DCI feeder and we are not counting on it working out. Our situation is that we live EOTP in a gentrifying neighborhood, so we figure we will stay for now and then could always move later if DCI does not pan out (and our place will have appreciated a lot in the interim). But if we got into a great private and could afford it, we'd probably do that. Otherwise, you may not be able to get into the private later.

Also, OP? Do you honestly have the $320,000 per child, after taxes, ready to go for a "top private" ? Or $750,000 for two kids? Easily, and regardless of job changes that you can't foresee right now?
IME on these threads, a lot of posters claim they're just struggling with a choice of educational philosophy, and implied or left unsaid is that three quarters of a million dollars is no biggie. Life tells me differently
