I am embarrassed to admit that, but I thought they just naturally got gross and you threw them out yearly and it never occurred to me to clean it. Then one day mil was over and after she'd used the bathroom I saw that the shower liner was spotless and shiny. She just took a scrubbrush to it. I felt like a disgusting mess who kept a dirty home for her son.

She's a very sweet person and wasn't like 'clean your shower curtain, bitch' but I felt so bad that it had never occurred to me to scrub at it. So after that I'd hit it up with tilex but also scrub it every couple weeks.

We don't have shower curtain in our current home.

OP, do you not have a liner and a fabric curtain? That's what we do. The liner is $5 and so I replace it every few months when it starts to look bad. The fabric curtain gets a wash when needed, but that's like every other year or so.

We used to do this and it was awful. We had an electrician add fans.

I'm with ya OP. I bleach mine and still have to replace almost yearly.

Wash it more frequently and add a cup of vingear not bleach. Or maybe half a cup. Just use white vinegar.

I always make sure I turn on the bathroom fan for ventilation after a shower.

Also, I make sure the shower curtain is spread out open after my showers...Not closed.

This solves the issues for me.

OP here. You all are right that the bathroom needs more ventilation. It's a small bathroom in an old colonial. I will have to look into getting a new exhaust fan installed.

Sounds like you don't have enough ventilation. Open a window if you have one. Otherwise turn on the fan. I've never had an issue with mildew on shower liners. I use a nylon liner with cotton outer curtain. Wash both every few months.

I wash with bleach every couple of months and keep them for serveral years. We do have a bathroom fan and keep the curtain drawn after showers. Bleach in the washer seems to get them new looking again. I have never though of washing with a towel but I will try that.

Bleach. Soak it in the washing machine for a day while you're at work, then finish the cycle and voila, no stains. I have the fabric-esque style shower liners from BB&B, not the plastic sheeting, FWIW. Less icky when I brush up against it.
