Net worth is what matters, not HHI.

I would consider HHI 300k and up to be high income. At that income level you are making nearly 3x the median household income for this area. You can afford housing in just about any area.

But the top 1% earners fall into the highEST category.
Despite not being able to do the things mentioned above (private school, yearly international travel) how much above medium income would be considered high?

There's income, and overall wealth.

For income, which is what most professionals are fixated on, you are in the top 1% of US earners if your household earns anywhere from $340k to $500K or more annually. As you see the threshold range is rather wide, and depends on different calculation methods. The top 10% starts at around 120K. Expensive areas such as SF, NY or DC do require a higher HHI.

And then there's accumulated wealth, which is a different beast altogether.

99% end at those amounts, not the middle class.

presumably NOVA is higher than DC. Don't lump us in with Norfolk and Blacksburg.

The post ran an article that the middle class ends at 600k in dc and around 400k in virginia and Maryland. Anything above that.

$200k is enough to make ends meet with a little planning. 300k is decent enough to not have to worry about dinners out, etc. $400k enables you to add private or European vacations. $450k+ Let's you do both.

What are your expectations? I'm a single mom and we do fine on $125k. I had equity in a home, no student debt, and have a government job. I don't love super large, but I don't worry about money either. Live in one of the "hot" close in zip codes frequently mentioned here, have good public schools. I don't consider myself "high" income but I'm nowhere near the edge.

A discussion thread where people who make 375k a year complain that they can't make ends meet and what their liberal friends think about that.
