They also really helped us with our transition into kindergarten, suggesting goals, allowing observations, and attending meetings at no extra charge. In addition, they have parent training so where you get to meet the other parents who have great suggestions (and also understand your struggles). Best part- they promise to NEVER send your child home- a true life and job saver!
My son ended up not going to the Lourie Center. But Dr. Venza is awesome. At our intake interview, I described one of my sons lacking social skills---when someone would say hello to my son, he would respond by screaming in their face. Dr. Venza deadpanned....always a winning way to say hello. He made me laugh and most of all he made me feel that I was no longer alone in this battle. That the cavalry was coming. For better or worse, when I did the intake, Dr. Venza advised me that there would not be space until the following school year--at the time it was 8 months away. By the time 8 months had passed, time had helped my son mature, PEP had helped, and his social skills group had helped. The PEP Parent Education, Dr. Venza, and myself all agreed that the Lourie Center was no longer the right place for my son. Even though I never interacted with him and his staff for a long duration, I will never forget his kindness and sense of humor when I was in the depths of despair.
