Yes, it's like practice, and practice makes perfect

A snippet from my 7 yo's conversation with his friend: ... and then you need to have sex to have babies. So if you have sex for a million times, you're going to have a million babies. And then what would you DO with them?

So the context here is that my son and his first cousin are adopted, something we have always been very open about. It is an oft-told story that the first well-intentioned adult to describe the mechanics of baby-making to my son was told: "No way. Everyone knows that if you want a baby, you go to an agency and fill out a lot of forms."

My three year old grandson asked me how babies get inside their mommies' tummies ( his mom was pregnant with #2), and I gave him a very simple but truthful answer about the sperm meeting the egg, etc. Then ten minutes later as I am buckling him in his car seat he asked " So what is sex?"

Fast forward seven years and I am eating with my two grandsons now 10 and 7 at the Cheesecake factory. Out of the blue "#1 asks me "What is a condom?" I took a deep breath and gave a matter of fact description of a condom and why it is used. Then grandson #2, who is an athlete, said to me " I don't get it. Why would people have sex if they don't want a baby? Is it like practice or something?"

I just love being a grandparent.

Accompanied by serious stink-eye, "You and Daddy did THAT?!"

Later, over breakfast one morning, very non-chalantly:

"I want to get married someday. ..But I don't want to have a baby. I don't want to stick my penis in some girl's vulva." (takes another bite of bagel)
