I'm in Takoma Park and there are lots of boys around here with long hair, even past their shoulders. I see less of that in northern Montgomery County when I see boys at sports games, but of course I'm not in the schools in places like Bethesda or Rockville.

I'm in Springfield, land of the military families - but there are currently 2 boys with #8 in my DS 3rd grade class and a few boys growing it out to get there! We also have been seeing what I call "hunger games" color on hair - purple, bright orange - also on the middle schooler.

I paid $16 for an under armour head band - so it was manly and not a headband, - the teacher was complaining about his hair in his eyes!

In Bethesda (where I've worked in public schools) I've seen all lengths. MS and HS seems to be where more boys try out long hair moreso than in ES. Makes sense: in ES, parents have more authority, probably prefer shorter hair (who wouldn't? So much easier to maintain! I'm trying to convince my 7 yo DD that a pixie would be PERFECT on her! )

It was a rough transition for us OP. We also came from an ultra laid back place that was much more about social-emotional education than academics (they got very rigorous in high school). you'll be fine. Keep things fun at home and be yourselves in the community. Don't sweat the early ES pressures. just ignore them. Nothing much matters academically, contrary to what they'll have you believe, until middle of middle school and high school. You will find more laid back people (and more long hair!) in Silver Spring and Takoma Park.

We lived there before, when the kids were tiny, but we're returning after many years away and we've been living in one of the most laid back places you can imagine.

ITs going to be a transition, that's for sure.

We moved here from a diff country and DS had long hair. The hair was not a problem but you will see the culture of MoCo schools does not "fit" with the long hair spirit. All the more reason to keep it long. It is the opposite of laid back here.

Not in MoCo but Fairfax, but for hair length, that's irrelevant. You get all sorts. Do what you like. Frankly.
