How old are your kids? Cooperstown is about 4 hours from the Falls. Check out the Finger Lakes and also check out the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester -- it's awesome for young kids.

We stopped in Pittsburgh on the way back from Niagara Falls and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Pirates play. We also enjoyed the children's museum and the views from the hilltops of the scenic city. Since you are visiting an industrialized area, I would also recommend that you find out which factories offer tours. We have found those to be quite entertaining for our children, moreso than museum visits because they get to see products that they recognize being made before their very eyes. They also get to pick up cool souvenirs from the gift shops.

Cooperstown is lovely - Keuka Lake and others nearby - and Cooperstown has a FANTASTIC farmer's museum as well as its baseball museum. Charming place- we have fond memories. Kids love the farm museum.

We did it this past summer - but we were in Michigan vacationing and then stopped in Detroit on the way. I LOVED Detroit - amazing museums there. The DIA, Ford Museum, etc. Niagra - I could take it or leave it. My kids weren't that impressed after about 2 hours and it was expensive and touristy/tacky.

Make sure you are aware if there are any races in Watkins Glen when you are planning to go because you do not want to be stuck.

Like the day I happened to be traveling through Alabama on I-20 West when they were racing at Talladega. That was a fun day.

Corning Museum of glass. Go online nd reserve a spot to make something before you go as the sessions fill up.
We did the sand blasting activity and my children love using their bowls that they made.

You can continue up to Watkins Glen and there is a great hike there.
Make sure you are aware if there are any reaces in Watkins Glen when you are planning to go because you do not want to be stuck.

Kind of what I thought. A lot of my family is from Buffalo, and none of them have anything good to say about that city.

I think the Falls are beautiful and well worth the trip--but I enjoy the landscape and beauty outdoors more than museums. Personal taste, I guess.

+1. We did this too, with two kids (12&13) a few summers ago. Loved the Finger Lakes and had a decent time in Niagara Falls-but only stayed one night.
