Yay!

Happy ending to the cat story for those who care! He had gotten out unbeknownst to the family. They came home an hour after my post and said he bolted inside and stayed by the fireplace all evening, hopefully having learned his lesson about sneaking out in wintertime.

Would you really call animal control for one of your friendly neighbor's cats, and then hope that the cat was still there when they managed to arrive? Why not just go get the cat and bring it in your house, and leave a message for the owner to come get it?

For the dog, where leaving it outside is an every day thing, and where it sounds like the OP is not friendly with the owner, yeah, I'd call, but not for the cat.

I would call and say "I'd like to make an anonymous report". If they say "you can't be anonymous" then you can stop the call. I don't think that will happen, but I've never made a report to the humane society.

When I call the humane society, what info do I need to give them about myself? The guy's house is right in front of mine and we've been neighbors for 17 years. While I am worried about the dog, I am sensitive to his reaction if he finds out I called.

Yep, I called on a neighbor a few weeks ago. It was one of those bitter cold nights and her dog was outside.

I'd call the humane society for an animal that belonged to someone I didn't know, but if the owners are friendly with the OP, I'd simply pick up the cat and put it somewhere warm and contained like a basement, or a box with blankets in the garage.

Even decent cat owners can let their cat out thinking "he'll be back in a minute because it's so cold" and then be in a situation where they can't find it. You don't know that they left the cat outside on purpose.

Dogs should not be kept outside most of the time in ANY weather without some form of doghouse/shelter. PLEASE CALL ANIMAL CONTROL for your jurisdiction in this case.

OP one last time -- wanted to add for those who are worried about this cat, there are definitely places on the porch where he can get up off the ground and burrow into furniture and stuff -- they have a huge furnished porch. So that's something.

OP here, thanks for the feedback. Went to try to bring him to my place but couldn't find the cat anywhere this time. They're still not home, so hopefully he found a way in or a nook to curl up in at least. Emailed the wife, and that exhausts the contact info I have for them.

I thought I saw a post on facebook about calling either animal control or the humane society for any pets seen outside today since it is so cold. Please call someone to pick up the cat.
