this is really terrible. is it possible your kid misunderstood/miscommunicated? and this is the parent of a fellow 8 yo, i assume, so it seems particularly unlikely she just doesn't understand kids...

I wouldn't have even thought to send $20 with my child to a party. In our circle, the host pays for the party activity.

If I were ever in the strange situation of having to pay my kid's admission for a movie party, I would have given the cash for the ticket directly to the parent so I knew he was covered. I think an 8-year-old is on the cusp of being able to manage a $20 budget on his own.

However, this parent's judgment is just so very weird that I don't think I could have held back my opinion. Are you sure this was a drop-off party? Who leaves a kid behind?

Sorry, OP. I didn't realize there were so many people raised by wolves out there. I really would have told the other parent off.

Teach your son your phone number, if you haven't, he should have asked an adult to let him call you.


I may become that parent who gives their 8-year-old a cellphone.

The mother/host told me she offered to call me but DS said no he'd rather stay and play video games. Uh, he is eight. He doesn't make those decisions, the adult does. Adults don't leave children in their care unsupervised.

Call her back and cuss her out

Thankfully DS wasn't upset, he was actually thrilled until the four dollars ran out. He apparently went outside a couple times, wonder why the management never realized!? N

When word gets around, no one will go to the classmate's party next year. Is the family on the poorer side so they couldn't pay for everyone or spot DS the $4?

The host should have paid. I have never sent any money with my kids when they were invited to a birthday party. That is really rude! And even if there was an expectation on her part that parents would send money, why would she ever think it was ok to leave an 8 year old guest out.
