It's a great bonding experience for both. Kids get something from grandparents that they can't get from their parents.
My parents are 3hrs away. They are young (late 50s). We go visit, the kids hardly notice us. Grandparents live on the Chesapeake bay. They have a magical summer full of sailing, crabbing, fishing, swimming, and cousins and friends. DH and I in turn also get a magical summer.
