It really depends on the child. I stopped sitting with my older two kids with homework by age 8 or 9. Our youngest has ADHD and learning challenges, and I sat with her well into middle school.

Funny, my parents never helped me with my homework. I often forgot it.

But I grew up to be well-organized, gainfully employed, pay my bills on time, etc.

So I have hope for my kids....

For the most part, my seven-year-old does it herself, usually without me bringing it up. She will sometimes ask me to review her math, but I never help during. I do have her read her Spanish to me aloud sometimes as I think she might skip some of it if she doesn't think I'm listening. In fact she is reading to me now; I just tune in occasionally.

8 yo I'm 2nd grade. He does it in the kitchen while I'm near. He will ask questions if he has and I'm there to support and check when he's done.

I would rather that too, but I wouldn't do my kid's work for her. That's dishonest if she's turning the work in with her name written on the top of the paper. It's indisputably cheating. That's not something I'm willing to teach my kid is OK and not something I would participate in.

Any family member will type up a paper for someone in a time crunch, but that's just typing out the already written rough draft not changing things or adding ideas, so we're totally comfortable with the ethics of that.

If I sat with my child, I would never get any cooking or laundry done. Plus, I would have to listen to him bitch and moan. No thanks. He gets it done faster w/o an audience.
