It is sad that there are so few practicing Catholics to be found this day. My kids are small but they only had one God parent each for the same reason.

Your child must be receiving religious education somewhere for a confirmation to be scheduled. Speak with the director or her teacher. No one in your current congregation at all?

Same thing happened to my best friend. We weren't attending our districted parish in our diocese, so we weren't eligible to be godparents. She had just moved back to the states and didn't know any other Catholics.

One thing to think positively about is that the church isn't going to randomly call just any parishoner and make them do this. Chances are, the person they assign to you is someone who genuinely wants to be more involved in the parish, cares about the faith, and is honored to be asked. Sure, there's the chance not. But also consider that this might be a wonderful relationship for your child.

I was in a baptism prep class recently (required for our DD's baptism) and there was another couple there who had been assigned Godparents for their child, b/c they were in a similar situation.

Basically the rest of our family and close friends are Protestant, and while they are very good Christians, that will not cut it for a Catholic confirmation.

I've heard the church can try to assign someone but we will be at a new parish by then and I really don't care for some forced pairing!

The parish will appoint one. When we moved to the USA my family had the same issue. All our family was abroad and it was time for me to do my confirmation. We had only a few friends in the area and they were not practicing/good standing Catholics. We spoke to the parish and they appointed someone. It was awkward the first day, but she was really nice and it worked out fine. They have to help you find someone.

I would also ask the church office. Perhaps they might be able to suggest someone who is active in the church. I volunteer as a chatechist and I would do it in a heartbeat if asked. Which church are you at?

I would speak with the new church and confirm that a parent can not be a sponsor. Some parishes do allow this. If not maybe there is a yourth director that would be willing to be the sponsor. It would be a wonderful way to get your child involved in the new parish.

I was confirmed in 1983 and we had it.

OP, your choices seem to be
1. Someone in your child's life that although you are not that close to, is willing to help your child
2. Someone at the new church who wants to help after explaining the moving around situation to the parish

There are really no other choices correct?
