I got 10k when I graduated. I'm sure my parents made less than most parents here on DCUM too.

DD spent graduation money in thirds: dorm items, clothes and summer spending money. The funds from her summer job were saved to be used for first semester expenses.

No beach week or European trips with friends. The usual vacation on MV.

Gifts are nice and it doesn't really matter what you give as long as it is heartfelt.

Only on DCUM would people argue about the material things they give to their kids!

As for my spouse, some of the best gifts he has given me are just things like taking care of our preschool son so that I could go to my high school reunion, and cooking and cleaning when I was sick.

What did your parents give you when you graduated from high school?

Talk about "a given. " It's actually a GIFT when your spouse cares for his own child and chips in when you are sick? That's what spouses do every day. Sure, be appreciative and love him for it. But he shouldn't think of those things as "gifts" in the sense this thread is discussing.

Our daughter graduated last year, and she got a luggage set, a new laptop, and her college education paid for.

I don't know how many HS seniors think that way. I totally agree with you though.

I graduated high school in '94 and I don't recall whether or not I got any sort of gift from my parents. I do know that at some point I did get a computer for college (Gateway 2000 baby!) and my college education completely paid for. When I graduated, it was THEY who earned a gift for sacrificing all that for me and my three siblings to graduate debt free. Unfortunately, all I could afford for them was a card. LOL!

My stepdaughter graduated high school a few years ago and we just gave her a few hundred bucks cash to spend on whatever she wanted (non-school related, i.e. - a beach trip, clothes, etc).

I don't think my parents gave me anything. The main gift I remember was an electric typewriter from my grandparents for college. So yeah, it was a while ago.

Birthdays are 'a given' too -- unless something utterly catastrophic and awful happens, yes you are going to live to be another year older. We still celebrate them as a milestone and give gifts.

High school graduation is a pretty significant milestone, IMO.
