My child is in the middle school. There is a mix of "lifers" from nursery on as well as kids who started in other grades. The majority of the kids have been there since at least kindergarten or 1st grade, I think. A great group of kids.

They lowered tuition AND for middle school tuition includes a week in Utah, a week in Italy and a week in France, no?

+1. Although I think they did just lower tuition for the earliest years.

We've had a terrific experience at WES. I firmly believe that the WES science program is the best in DC at the elementary and middle school levels. (I don't want to say why but I know quite a bit about independent school science programs in this region.) With the sad passing of Mr. A, though, the school will have to work hard to retain that quality. I can't wait to see what the new Head of School does.

Yes, it is hard on some kids to leave WES. But, DDs had such big turnover in their classes-the majority left thru the years. It's harder to be left behind at WES.

The problem is that your child will make friends and then when you leave because of the problematic grades/teachers, it's hard on your child. You may want to consider what that would be like. Also, it's "luck of the draw" - in 3rd and 4th grades they each have 1 problem teacher (not good with kids in general) so half of the class parents are happy and the other half are miserable and trying to survive the year -- it makes it very awkward for parents when interacting and it's just unfair when you are paying the same tuition yet having totally different experiences. We are so happy we left after 2 bad years in a row. WES has a lot of potential, but some major changes have to be made. They are turning a blind eye to a downright cruel teacher, and it's not right.

Kindergarten is very nice, agreed.
The problems crop up and don't resolve after around 2nd grade. Beware.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience in kindergarten at WES last year. I can't say enough about the teachers we had then and now in first grade too. Lots of very happy kids in that class.

Given the discussion above, I wonder whether the complaints from third and fourth grade are due to 1-2 good teachers who has not compromised their integrity while facing pressure from $$$ paying parents...
