Dr Washington and the newest lady dr werknow are ok but are not as observant ( like missing hand foot and mouth!). If McKnight retired altogether we would probably leave.

This was our experience as well. This, and the parking hassle, led us to look for another practice.

I think this thread is old but I wanted to see if impressions of McKnight have changed at all recently. We were originally really happy with the practice, but we just don't click with either McKnight or Washington. I feel like I can't get a straight answer out of either of them - it's all "on the one hand, on the other hand" until I finally said "I am not going to sue you. I slept 45 minutes last night, I just need you to tell me what you actually thinks is best." Also, and maybe I'm crazy or sensitive, but I feel this very faint undertone of racial tension there. Like I'm this neurotic over functioning white mom from a gentrifying area trying to join a predominately black practice. It feels uncomfortable sometimes.

And then with each appointment, we started seeing more of her partner and less of her. Unfortunately, I just did not click with Dr Washington (or, frankly, respect her medical expertise) like I did Dr McKnight. I began to wonder if Dr McKnight isn't turning over her practice in preparation for her eventual retirement, so we left the practice.

Also, the parking garage is a nightmare if you're trying to get out during a mass employee exodus like lunchtime...or frankly just trying to park (e.g. cars taking up 2 spaces). And the med center hallways sometimes look like a VA hospital, with very sad-looking people parked in wheelchairs.

Agree with all this. McKNight isnt the warmest person but I think she is best dr and I trust her completely. Dr Washington her partner is nicer but has missed a couple of big things in our kid. If I am particularly concerned I always request that my apt be with McKnight. There was a third partner, Dr Workneh who was only there about 6 months and then left. I get the sense that McKnight is slowing phasing out but the practice is growing and they need more drs! On the plus side, they have office staff, never long wait times, always call me back promptly and I can get same day appointments. The parking garage is an issue at certain times but not impossible.

Dr. Workneh is no longer at McKnight and they also no longer take appointments on Saturday.

Sorry, not Washington, I meant McKnight!

Our son is still very young but we are pleased with McKnight pediatrics thus far. It was recommended to us by multiple parent friends as well. Like previous posters, we definitely appreciate the professionalism of the front office and scheduling.

Hamburger's office is a pediatric factory. She is a great doctor, but the nurses lack warmth, and the waits are long. A nurse there once tried to give my baby the wrong vaccines because she didn't bother to check her age on the chart. We changed pediatricians.

CP&A just opened a Capitol Hill location, if that helps. You should probably check to see which doctors are accepting new patients. We love the doctors and while parking is expensive, I found it helpful that they were in the same building as the breastfeeding center.

We went to Dr. McKnight when we lived in Columbia Heights for convenience reasons because we didn't have a car. I like her and thought the front desk staff was nice and always got us in quickly. When my child was 2 we removed and went to a new practice. The new pediatrician was horrified at the lack of treatment for a condition my child has. The new pediatrician had the condition under control in about two weeks with a new treatment regime and asked me who we had been going to before that let it get so bad. So I wouldn't recommend her.

Anonymous wrote:I really like Dr. Washington at Dr. McKnight's office and haven't had any of the complaints that the PPs have had (we've also thankfully had a relatively healthy first year with our DD). We can always get an appointment when we need one, and the doctors have been pretty great about calling back when we call with concerns after hours.

Also - you may want to consider what makes more sense logistically. One of the reasons we picked Dr. McKnight over Childrens was location - we live in Petworth and our daycare is in Petworth so getting to and from Washington Hospital Center (where the office is) is relatively easy for us, whereas Foggy Bottom would have been a slog. This makes a big difference for the amount of time you need to be out of work for wellness and sick appointments.

The logistics are basically what led us to Dr. McKnight's practice, too. We've been there for nearly 6 years now. We live in Columbia Heights and the prospect of having to go all the way downtown or to Foggy Bottom with a sick kid wasn't appealing. We also haven't had any of the parking issues that others raised, but we do try to get morning appointments for routine, pre-scheduled stuff. The parking garage also now requires employees to park in the lower level so maybe that helps.

I also can see what PPs do in Dr. McKnight not being particularly warm and fuzzy, but she does warm up some after time and I've always found her to be phenomenally calming (both with me and my kids). We also did not love Dr. Washington right off the bat, and she'll occasionally say something that likely came out wrong. But we have never had issues with her care or with her identifying illnesses and have definitely come to like her more over the years. Dr. Workneh also seems very nice--we mainly see her for sick visits. The nurses and other staff also have gotten MUCH better over the last couple of years. My kids are past the point of really frequent visits but they still know each of them and ask about the other when one isn't there. The Saturday and expanded hours are wonderful--they used to close at 4 and that was tough! The lab downstairs is surprisingly good with kids for blood draws. I dread those but they've been really competent. And Dr. McKnight's office was able to get us immediate appointments with two difficult to schedule offices, an ENT at Georgetown and the Allergy Dept. at Children's.

I picked initially based on proximity. We live a mile south and after 2 years of trekking to GW for IVF, there was no way I was going to head downtown for all the well child visits if I could help it. I have never actually seen Dr McKnight in the past 10 months, most of our visits alternate between Washington & Workneh. I really like Dr Workneh - she is very warm and friendly.
Most of the time there is rarely if any wait which is great when you're dealing with a baby and nap schedule. We tend to walk usually as parking is a PITA.

We go to Dr McKnight's practice, and we love it! While Dr McKnight may not be the most personable of docs, she is incredibly knowledgeable, and we have actually really clicked with Dr Washington. (I have no idea how they manage to keep patients basically on schedule when i routinely have half hour conversations with Dr Washington, and yet I've never had a long wait). I've only met the new doc (Workneh, I think?) once. Hard to say from the one visit; she wasn't chatty like Dr. Washington but certainly answered all my questions and was great with the new baby.

We didn't click with McKnight, although we had no concerns about her competence. Ended up at the Children's Health Center at CNMC and we love it. Great doctors, easy to get appointments, Saturday hours, and best of all the doctors can consult very easily with specialists. We did have one serious problem in my DD's first month of life, and were very happy with how rapidly they had us in the care of the relevant department.
