Not PP but I agree with this. My early reader is bored to tears in K and it's starting to manifest itself in behavior issues.

Both my kids could read at least a year before K, but they were never bored. They wish they could go back to K now! One did get in a little trouble, but is was not because of boredom, nor related to reading at all.

My son was reading at the start of k and my daughter starts K next year and is unlikely to be reading. We are working on sounds with her, but I am not worried about it at all.

My kid somehow taught himself at about 3.5. He is 5.5 and reading on a second grade level.

My K son is an emergent reader. He can sound out basic words and recognizes a number of sight words. He's not at a point where he will just pick up a book and read on his own, but he can make it through a Bob book with text like 'Peg and Ted went on a trip". He seems to be about middle of the pack in his MoCo K class.

We finished all the levels of bob books the spring before Kindergarten. Halfway through the year he is reading level 2 I can read books (1st - 2nd grade). He is one of the better readers in his class. Some kids are still struggling with basics.
As I understand it kids are at all different levels in K. We are in a Spanish immersion school so I wanted my son to be solid in English before adding another language.
While I personally wanted my DS reading in K Not reading in K is not unusual.

My son did not know how to read in K. He became an emergent reader by end of K and now mid-way through first grade is a beginner reader.

His teacher says he is at grade level. I think he's probably a little behind in terms of actual reading the words, but his comprehension makes up for it.

He does not ever pick up a book and read for pleasure, so I am going to focus on encouraging that these next six months.

I have two kids one was a fluent reader when he started K white the other barely knew the alphabet. She improved slowly during k and then really took off in 1st and is now a very strong reader. Not everyone is ready at the same time. And my early reader was just recently turned 5 when he started k while the late reader was nearly 6 (Oct birthday).

DD is in K and reading. I thought that she had to learn during K, but it's 1st grade. We read alot at home, but we started practicing at home because I wanted to avoid her falling behind since she is the youngest in class (Nov bday, just turned 5). Fortunately, she wanted to learn and looks forward to reading bedtime stories to me at night.

Yes, but she's an early reader. Plenty of kids in her class are working on the beginning basics.

My daughter was reading before K, but she's the second oldest in the class.. She was reading at a solid 1st grade, early second grade level at the beginning of the year and is now learning at mid second grade level. Reading here, I thought that would be solidly in the middle of the pack. However, she's getting pulled out, along with one other child, for advanced work with the reading specialist. I know this sounds like a brag/humble brag, but I really just want to express that all these kids you hear about reading three to four years about grade level are really extremely rare.

The goal for my daughter, according to the specialist, is to reintegrate her into a regular group by the end of this year or early next. So I take it the expectation is that the levels in her class will start to even out.

Yes. The nanny taught him to read before kindergarten. I'm not sure how much it mattered although he did start his academic experience on top (so to speak) and that has motivated him to stay on top.

My son could read those very basic level one readers by October in kindergarten. But he was 5 3/4 yo. By then. A bit on the older side for kindergarten. There were plenty reading much better than him. And plenty who didn't pick it up until the very end of k.
