I love my ILs. Despite having six (soon to be eight) grandkids, they both (MIL especially) seem to be tireless and is so immensely helpful. Love them so much.

OP, I love your post. Especially since my MIL is the exact opposite (selfish), and your story is exactly how I want to be some day.

My MIL is very nice, but she tends to like to be a mildly pampered guest when she visits. Pre-kids, it wasn't too hard to keep her satisfied, but after twins, trying to cater to her and pamper her was getting very stressful. While we want to encourage her to see the kids as much as possible, but at one point, I suggested to my spouse that we cut back on the visits by my MIL for a while because it was hard to take care of her and the kids at the same time. My spouse had a nice private conversation with her and the next time she came to visit, she just started helping out. Not a lot, but for her, it was a huge overture. She did some shopping and cooked dinner for us twice while she was visiting. She picked the kids up from daycare several times that week allowing me to work later than usual. She tried really hard and it helped a lot. I'm so glad that I have a nice MIL. Some MIL would take issue the "demands" but instead she just looked for ways to make herself less of a burden and more of a help.

+2 Having come from a really dysfunctional family it's a breath of fresh air. Now they aren't perfect but they are helpful, really thoughtful about boundaries (which their parents weren't), and generally just the kind of people you'd want to be friends with.
