FCPS IEP process. It's not just the money we had to spend on private evaluations and advocates, it's the emotional ringer you go through when you know what the school is doing defies logic, is contrary to the law and is just morally wrong. Then, the cynicism that develops when FCPS quickly reverses itself when faced with a state complaint/attorney. It's colored all my interactions with them at IEP meetings. I know new school team members wonder why we insist on such detailed meeting notes and nitpick over words and meaning. It's because we learned the hard way that we have to document every detail.

I hated fcps as a kid. Too restricting and stuffy. And if you were smart but not smart enough you were ignored. Luckily I applied to an arts high school far, far, far away and loved it.

Make sure they know you are willing to bring in a lawyer.

Horrible process! My son was called names by the teachers no less. We finally shelled out the cash to have him tested privately, which identified his learning disability. The school just preferred to call him lazy, because he tested so well on standardized tests. When we brought them the results, they told us they would not accept them, because they didn't instigate the testing. I then asked them whether or not they would prefer to discuss this in a court of law, because I could not see the educational difference between their specialist and the one we hired.

The school backed down.

You HAVE to play hardball with public school systems.

This is the same teacher who didn't call me when he broke his leg on the playground and tried to tell me she had no idea he was hurt. We went straight from school to the ER where he was put in a thigh to toe cast.

This teacher sounds cruel and evil. What a sick person that shouldn't be around kids.

Feel the same in LCPS. Our case included lots of retaliation against my elementary aged child. I'm still not over it and don't trust any school staff.


Can you elaborate please? We are going to go that route due to ADHD and thIs gives me the shivers

I am the PP, and we are still it in too.

We are still in it- which makes the PTSD harder to treat.

A cliquey/bully teacher in a private school targeted. I work full time and I am not "involved" in school during school hours so she felt like my DD was an easy target. She targeted other kids who had similar profiles. She was overly punitive in grading my DD's work and would take off full letter grades for ridiculous things like using blue versus black pen for a writing assignment in 2nd grade. I probably could have dealt with that somewhat but she made my daughter cry many, many times during the school year by singling her out and bullying her. She made outlandish claims that my DD was incapable academically- though that was far from the truth as demonstrated in her grades since then/before then. The administration supported me a little but not enough.
