can people note where they get the Japanese Thermal reconditioning in DC area and the stylist? I had it done years ago but someone not trained and it was a disaster. Recently had it done in Philly but would prefer NOT to travel any leads would be appreciated thanks

I have thin, fine, medium-length hair (below shoulders) that is wavy and gets frizzy quite easily (e.g., DC summer). It's also oily at the root and I need to wash/dry/flat iron practically every day. I have been afraid of a pro treatment because my hair is so thin and I am fearful it will break or fall out. Anyone out there have a recommendation for what to try or use? Is there a "light" version for those of us without a lot of hair?

Yes!! I had the Japanese straightening done and it was extremely damaging. My hair broke off with the slightest pull. I ended up with a halo of frizz around my face from the hair that broke off and grew in curly.

I've had keratin a couple of times and although my hair was not quite as maintenance-free as with the Japanese it was not at all damaging.


Your hair will not damage if the person is very experienced. Most aren't - they just jumped on the bandwagon when it became popular and don't understand fully what level of product to use or how long to let it sit. They also straighten highlighted hair which is a big no-no. Also, coloring (especially highlighting) you fair and straightening will cause damage.

I just had thermal reconditioning done for the 5 time three weeks ago. My hair is a tiny bit drier (though it is winter), but no damage or breaking. I pay $300 every 9 month and my hair is wash and wear. I do not, however, highlight or color it.

NP here who is interested in this Keratin treatment. before kids I had beautiful fine and straight hair. post kids my hair is now wavy/s-waves and looks like a bad frizzy semi-perm. I am so sick of having to blow out/flat iron every few days. Who has time with three kids? Would keratin work for me? Can it be applied on a nursing mom?

That is at least $2400/year on hair. That just seems insane to me.


I pay $1000/year. But I spend zero on hair product and I get my mornings back everyday of my life. It's as if I was born with beautiful straight , shiny hair. Hours and hours of my life back -- totally worth $1000.

i'm surprised to see all the use of japanese straightening. i thought ppl had mostly moved on from that and that keratin was the norm. interesting.
