I've never liked the smell of the Ikea cabinets. The showroom smell bothers me.

Look for floor models at best buy for your appliances. We picked up a ge profile dishwasher for about 40% off retail. And they installed.

We did a gut and remodel on a small kitchen a year and a half ago and spent right around $25k. We purchased IKEA cabinets, but we used a general contractor to do demolition, cabinet assembly and installation, plumbing, electrical, and installing the tile backsplash.
My husband did all the painting himself, and we bought all new appliances.
That budget does not include the price of wood floors, which we installed ourselves across the entire first floor.

OP here - Thanks all! This is super helpful.
Our built in desk and some extra cabinetry (which includes floor to ceiling pantry space) is for the breakfast nook that abuts and opens up to kitchen. Right now, it's being used as a playroom but 5 years down the road, I can see it as a homework area. We just have no practical space for our laptop, mail, etc. except upstairs in our bedroom so a built in desk would solve this.
