But you have to pay (and tip) before you even get your coffee so how do you know whether to tip?

I'm like the majority of folks on here (and thank goodness since I always worry I'm the only one) but places where there's a counter and cashier do not get tips from me.

To the employee who posted. Yes, I understand every little bit extra helps. But that's true of all people and all lower paying jobs. It is unfortunate that our society has evolved into this tipping frenzy. The only ones who win with this environment are the large corporations. They pay 3 cents and charge $3 for a cup of coffee, pay their staff barely anything and shift the responsibility of supplementing their employee wages onto the customers. The sooner we all stop tipping, hopefully the sooner employees will get their justified pay - something higher than minimum wage - from their employers.

I only tip at places like that if it's a place I go to regularly. I'd leave a buck every 3rd or 4th time, or something like that. So, I guess .25$.

If you look at product alone. There are other costs to doing business.

It seems that there's a lot if anger around tipping at coffee shops. I worked at coffee shops and always appreciated the little extra we all made (tips are split between all staff members). It allowed for extra grocery money, maybe a tank of gas, etc. Coffee shop employees don't make a lot - maybe a hair more than minimum wage - and the tips are a definite help.

No tip ...... the tipping culture here is ridiculous as evidenced by people here asking how much to tip just about anyone who performs any kind of service.

I don't frequent cafes and coffee shops much anymore. Too expensive when there are so many options these days to make a decent cup of coffee in minutes at home.

Starbucks smartphone app now has a feature where you can add on a tip right from your phone. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I forget.
