When I see diamonds I see a diamond cartel, conflict diamonds, human rights violations, kids with no hands --don't wear them and not impressed by people who do.

I just think about what I giant waste of money that is - think of the mortgage payments - so I guess I assume it's real. I'm no fun!

I always assume they are real. Who would wear a fake?

The QVC fakes are ok if you go a carat or under. Best for eternity rings. A large stone from QVC looks fake to me; the stone is not realistic looking and most importantly, the setting is cheap. I think the key to fooling people is a high-quality setting.

Mine is only a carat on platinum band we had designed. (I found a picture online.)

If I see a big diamond, I assume one of the following:
1) the couple is rich
2) its an heirloom
3) its a really crappy cut but they sacrificed quality for size

I rarely think a diamond is fake, but maybe I've been fooled all along.

I wear an heirloom but its less than a carat. I love it and don't plan to upgrade, though we could afford to. One of my best friends has an enormous diamond that was upgraded, and she admits to me that she upgraded to "keep up with the Jones'" (and they can afford to do this, among other things). She doesn't live in this area and when I visit her, there is clearly some sort of "biggest diamond" competition going on among her crowd. All the diamonds are enormous.

I've bought Diamonique from QVC in the past and it's really nice quality for the price. It lasts and does not go cloudy or scratch. They will replace it at any time if it fails. I had a stone fall out of a ring after years and they replaced it for free.

I'm 46, so plenty old enough to look like I earned it. I don't actually care much what other people think but I do agree that a ring pushing 5 cts might be a bit much to pull off at the PTO meeting. Still, I do love me some bling...so hard to resist. LOL
