PG Tips should be at your local Giant. It's a good serviceable basic black tea drunk all over England.

I imagine they also carry Twinings, so look for their Earl Grey, Lady Grey and darjeeling.

We always have PG Tips in the house.
I like Twinings Earl Grey.
I love the stuff my DH gets me at Teavana ~ I think it's oolong chai. But it's ridiculously expensive.

OP here. I live in MD but not anywhere near DC. I do have a Giant near my office so I'll stop there today. I'll try PG Tips and go from there. I'd rather not order online. It's one more thing to have to remember to do. Thanks!

Lipton Yellow Label tea is quite nice and not at all like the awful generic Lipton that's popular in the U.S. You can usually find it in Asian and Indian groceries.

OP, where do you live that your local grocery store only carries Lipton?

I second many of the PPs' recommendations and add that Ahmad Assam tea is good. Try ordering from Amazon, maybe, if your local stores don't have anything good.

Teaism sells lovely loose leaf tea if you are in the District. There's a store right above the Navy Memorial, 8th and D NW.


I'd also check out some Asian markets near you. They usually sell loose leaf teas. (You may or may not be able to read the label, but it's tea, so the cooking instructions aren't complex.)

Two Leaves and a Bud (Whole Foods) has a fragrant and delicious Earl Grey.

Balducci's sells Mariage Freres. Absolutely incredible tea, notably Earl Grey Imperial, Earl Grey French Blue, or Marco Polo.

Of course, there's also Fortnum and Mason.

Harney & Sons is based in NYC but you can order their teas from their online website. And extraordinarily-reasonable prices, especially compared to Teavana. Takes about a week for shipment to arrive. Very good teas, IMO.
