Virginia Tech does + and -, but does not give A+, so an A- is 3.7 and A is 4.0. You can get a 100 in the class and still only get an A, no A+. This annoyed me too, especially since I got a 98 or 99 in one or two classes and that doesn't get differentiated on the transcript versus a 93 or 94, which is a regular old A.

3.5 GPA can go to medical school. 3.1 can not.

3.1 can definitely go to Medical School. It won't be the top school, but they can still get in. Other than those type of professional schools, who cares about college GPA. No employer has EVER asked me for that information and I don't put it on my resume, although I have seen some that list it.

Must not have been very many As if the GPA was 3.1 (a hair over straight Bs).

Her work was judged less good than someone who got a straight A (or straight B) and her GPA reflects that. How is that unfair or hard to understand?

My SLAC 20 years ago computed an A- at 3.67, and so on. If you're disappointed in your child's grades, suggest that he or she go for the regular B or regular A rather than settling for a B- or A-.

I think you need a math refresher. Minuses are worth only 1/3 of a point less than the regular grade, so no number of minuses could drop you more than 0.33 GPA points. (sigh...do these kids learn/remember *anything*)?

Ivy league STEM prof whose students grade grub about a minus (or going up from a B to a B+) all the time for this 1/3 of a point. And yes, many are pre-med.

30+ years ago our flagship state school gave + and -'s that all counted toward GPA except that an A+ was only for pride and was not officially recognized on a transcript. A GPA of between 3.7-3.8 was in the top 1-2% of the school. Me think OP protests too much

That would be great...PP here, and UMD keeps A+ at 4.0--thus, the system sucks.

Same at my DCs school and she got 2 A+'s last semester but got dragged down by a B.

^^^ and btw, it was a passing grade at his very competitive college. The only failing grade I know of is an "F."
