In a fire, I would first grab my mouth guard, then my kids!

My house was hit by a tornado and completely destroyed. The one thing I searched for and took with me the night it happened was my brothers funeral flag. He was killed in combat when I was 13 and they presented the flag to me rather than my father at the funeral. I never would have thought that would be it, but standing there looking at what used to be my home it was the only thing that came to mind.

Ha!

Yes, kids and pets don't count. Obviously. This is like when som of my religious friends say they would bring "The Bible" as their one desert island book. Nice, but not the spirit of the game!

I have a hand-carved olive wood Nativity set that my dad purchased in the Holy Land when he was in the navy. He later made a mahogany box to store it in. My family would find my charred corpse trying to lug that heavy thing down the stairs.

Of course, everyone would treasure kids and pets, but that's a lovely memento of your mom, OP. Thanks for sharing.

If I could only save one material thing from my home, it would be my dining room table. My grandfather made it

My son's blankie. He's had it since birth and is nearly 8, sleeps with it very night and always says how much he loves it. Unlike Linus he doesn't drag it everywhere but he would be devastated if it were gone.

Kids are not a possession.

Def my dog. Everything else is replaceable.
