Are you related or is this someone's boyfriend. This matters in how I would handle ie cousin Bobby get your sweaty butt off my couch. If it is your sister's beau and still in the trying to impress him for her. Then I would offer a towel and water and complement on a great workout

Ok so I'd be slightly more direct - oh my goodness bob - you don't want to sit on that couch sweaty. Our last friend that did that turned blue from the upholstery and he said it took a month to scrub off his skin - let's move to the kitchen table until you shower !

I would have handed him a towel and suggest he hit the shower.

As a neat freak I have learned to do so and make no apologies for it.

Op, even if you say, "oh! please don't sit on the coach!", that's better (any way you say it) than NOT saying something and thinking badly of him.

OP, your guest was rude for not going straight to take a shower. Forget about your couch, he must have smelled like hell.

I would have said - "wow Bob, you must have gotten a great workout! I wish I could sweat as much as you do when I work out! Let me get you some fresh towels, the bathroom/shower is upstairs on the left. Lunch will be ready by the time you're done showering"!

OP here -- My post specifically asks for advice on what to say to my houseguest.

The problem is that I'm not that comfortable with telling another adult how to take care of basic hygiene. But I also don't want him to stink up my house.

You say, "Oh my goodness, you really worked up a sweat! Here are some towels, and the shower is free for when you want it."

You don't say, "DON'T SIT ON MY GOOD COUCH LIKE THAT YOU WILL RUIN IT!!!!!"

Yuck. This is why I hate having people in my home.
