Very mature and awesome post OP.

I have to do the same thing with my mom. I know she has no ill intent but she doesnt like my MIL much and we have a tendency to gossip and joke when we get together so we end up shitting on MIL. Its hard but I try to keep my relationship with my MIL separate now, without getting angry at my mom for her opinion.

But in all seriousness, I think it's great that you were able to see that, and hope you have a much more pleasant relationship with your MIL going forward.

+1. Good for you OP!!!

I've had to remind myself that she will never change and not to waste energy on trying to please her or receive any kind of acknowledgment.

She also is a conversation killer; stays on one subject and tells the same dozen stories. If you try to change the subject, it goes right back to her. I've learned to just shut up and zone out and tolerate.

We must have the same MIL.

Wow. Me 3.
Even word.

Me 4.

This must be a common old person problem. My MIL is the same way.

I'm the PP who wrote about my MIL. She's 67. In her case, she's just ruled her family with an iron fist, never had a MIL herself, and beces angry and enraged by anyone who challenges her and has odd loyalties with seemingly casual acquaintances, but very few close friends.
