There may be one dorm on campus that is the designated dorm for - usually foreign students - to live during winter break, since they are less likely to do home.

I graduated from college in 2003 and we had to move out for Xmas break too. It was a time for the maintenance department to clean and make repairs without being disruptive to the students.

In any event, I would not want my belongings left behind.

My DD also has to move out of her dorm (they have storage available). The dorm is being used for winter session and we knew about it in the fall. It is a PITA but we have no choice.

I went to a large state university and we had to move everything out winter break . I was OOS, and left things with friend at private college near by. Later lived off campus to solve the problem. SLACs didn't do this.

PP--If you name the school then people might know more information on what exactly this check out is. The emails and posters could be for students who are NOT returning in the spring or switching dorms. fyi.

OP--- I would call the school and clarify what exactly they mean because I am a college coach and only know of 1 school which does this. It is VERY rare. Please call and check before you go to all this trouble.

Last year my DD had to pack up some stuff (not everything) because they needed to exterminate her dorm over break. But that was one dorm only because of an issue, not a normal practice. And it wasn't mandatory. It hasn't happened in any other year. Maybe that's what's going on with your DD?

At my college they turned off the electricity, so things like fridges had to be removed or at least not leak everywhere. The dorms were locked and no one could get in. So maybe the school got fed up with parents calling b/c their kid forgot something in their dorm, so they're just saying take everything out.

"check out" doesn't mean move stuff home. Check out is something that usually occurs.
