My dad has one because he went into administration. In most places, it's required if you want to get to the top of the administrative ranks. He retired as a Superintenent.

I have an academic PhD. My dad would be the first to tell you that getting an EdD is not nearly as hard as getting a PhD. He did it when I was a kid while he worked full time. It was a necessary box to check so he could get a promotion and nothing more. If you want to stay in the classroom, don't bother.

If you want to teach, nothing beats experience in the classroom with the help of a strong classroom mentor and another affiliated with a university/grad program. I'm not sure the Ed.D is useful for teaching.

The return on investment just isn't there for me. My M. Ed. classes were a joke (but a necessary evil to get my license), so I have a hard time justifying the time/money if the payback isn't immediately apparent.
