The worst, though, was the guy who told me he had built a computer from scratch and had named it after his mother.

+1. Clingy, needy, and controlling were immediate deal breakers for me back in my dating days.
Other db's included:
Always texted instead of calling.
Rude to waiters.
Conservative. Didn't have to be super liberal - I married a moderate R who went from voting for Bush twice to voting for Obama twice (penance? trying to undo the damage?) - but nothing more right than that.
Bad kisser.
Overly intense.
Sneaky/dishonest/prone to exaggeration or dissembling.
PP 29 guy here - I'd rather call but my generation of women NEVER pick up the phone. Everything is text.
PP here, and you're right - women can be just as bad as guys. Personally, I found it rude and annoying. This was back when texts were fairly new, and I never really have understood the obsession. I'm 39, so maybe I'm an old crank.

These days men (and I do mean MEN, not boys - I'm in my mid-30s and not dating young guys here) will ask you for a date, then want to reschedule several times, or cancel and you don't hear from so you write them off, then you hear from them and they want to go out again, etc.
It's happened several times to me and my single friends. You can't tell if they're OBOing you (Or Better Offer aka trying to juggle more women than they can handle/keep straight) or if they are just naturally ditzy.
