10yo and 7yo here. They are not allowed to play rated M at all, but 10yo has several friends who play GTA V and Call of Duty. I don't understand it. He's not allowed at their houses unless I've talked to the parents ahead of time and they promise not to allow rated M games while he's there. I don't even want him watching the OTHER kids play.

Thanksgiving is tricky, though. My nephews are all in late high school/college and I know they'll be playing that stuff today, so I'm going to have to keep a close eye on my boys in a really loud, chaotic environment (large family, small house).

Have you ever seen or played Borderlands? It's really not that bad and I think you can even turn off the fake blood. I'm not saying it's appropriate for an 8 year old, but it is very cartoon like and you are mostly shooting at aliens and monsters. There are really no relations to real life in it, not like GTA or Assassin's Creed. There is also a fun split screen Co-Op.

Wow. I have a second grader and I find that apalling. I'm not one to shelter my kids like crazy, but that is completely inappropriate for second graders. Isn't the game ALL about violence?

I'm appalled too. I thought I'd face peer pressure when my son got to middle school. This is way too early.

Yes, it's violent. The main guy is a hit man. I'd be OK with it in high school, depending on the kid.

Not that poster but there's a significant difference between allowing certain behavior in the house and letting them choose what to do outside of the house. In the house means readily accessible 24/7. In large amounts. They don't get that at a friend's house.

When they have their own house, they can make their own rules. My rules for my house is no M rated or other violent games - no matter who or how old.
