I was recently diagnosed with May-Thurner syndrome aka iliac vein compression. It usually presents as pain in the left leg, pelvic area and is even mistaken for sciatica! The iliac vein runs along your inner leg and is a main return of blood to your heart. It’s not as rare as people think and there is a much higher occurrence rate in women vs men. A simple ultrasound of my abdomen showed that I had over a 50% blockage. I am in my 30s.

What is the cause?

Tightness. Use a foam roller or a rolling stick. Or see a PT.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned this yet. Many of you may have lipedema. It’s a painful type of fat that can’t be lost by diet or exercise. Google it, I’m sure you’ll find your answer there.

I love when it hurts! I was just making my husband rub my shins last night. I am an athlete and love painful massages that work out the kinks.

I love those pedicure shin/calf massages.

I had that for years and avoided massage. Then it got worse. It turns out for me the pain was a sign that it needed to be worked out. It was really, really painful. First by my physical therapist (I had to stop my self from begging her to stop) and now I keep it up with various rollers.

I thought I was the only one!! OMG it’s exactly like a hot poker or rubbing a bad bruise all along the inside of my shins.

I was gonna say it's shin splints. I don't think you have to be a runner to get them. I got them when I started taking martial arts, and only because I was completely out of shape before hand. Yes, I'm a woman.

Get your vitamin D level checked. I experienced the same type of pain when I got a massage or pedicure. Turned out my vitamin D levels were deficient. Once I began supplements, I noticed Improvement.

Anonymous wrote:Does anyone experience extreme pain with even light massage (getting a pedicure) in the shins, along the inside lower leg. It's much worse on the left leg, and feels like my leg is bruised when rubbed. It even will feel like a hot poker is rubbed along my shin. I have to ask them to stop sometimes if going lighter doesn't help.

I've had this for years, went to a very knowledgeable masseuse who told me I had circulatory issues. Went to the vein doctor and sure enough. It's worth looking into...

I have this same issue. I thought fibromyalgia wasn't a real disorder, though?

Sometimes it feels like the masseur is cutting my skin with a knife! It is fibromyalgia

I have it worse insides of legs but also calves and thighs and arms. Feels lumpy to the masseur and I have fibromyalgia

Yes! I have this, too. I get the same painful feeling if they massage my lower back/upper buttocks. It is awful. But my shins are the worst. I’ve long suspected I have fibromyalgia so maybe it’s that.
