We don't do this because both my parents and ILs are local, but my BIL and SIL (DH's siblings) live out of town and they do that almost every time that my ILs come to visit them. It's never for a long time (because ILs never come for longer than 4-5 days), but they get to go away with their respective spouses for a weekend or so, while the ILs watch the kids. From what I can tell, it works great for everyone - parents get time away from their kids, and ILs get lots of time with their grandkids.

I assumed from OP calling it a "mini vacation" that they would be gone a week or less probably and have the rest of the time to visit. My own parents and probably even DH's are like this- they live on the east coast though (but a flight away) and suggest stuff like this a lot if they come to visit for more than a few days. If they come for a week or so they ask if we want to go away for the long weekend.
