If I read this right, you want hip but not too hip. What about Columbia Heights - Acre 121 then the sports bar right by there - Joes? Or just do the sports bar. Depending on the night and what's going on they can be loud or quiet.

Dino's in Shaw, then across the street to 1905 for more drinks if you are still inclined. Dino's is a nice place to linger over a leisurely meal (wine rather than beer, tho).

DGS Delicatessen in Dupont Circle then beers at the Tabard Inn.
Or yes, Marvin. And ditto on places with reservations. I don't shell out for babysitter money to wait in lines, myself.

Red Hen or Kapnos (I don't remember Kapnos being that loud). Or Marvins, which is still solid even though it's no longer the hot new place on the scene. I would avoid the places on 14th that don't take a reservation.

Depends. The booths are conductive to conversation. But I'd only go for that during mid-week. On a weekend there's going to be hurry to turn that table over and get the revelers to the bar upstairs. Which is a cool bar, that has bocce, but yes it's noisy.
