Ideally pulled pork should be smoked in which case it will have plenty of flavor without any nasty sweet bbq sauces.

Yes. He can come up with something. Baked beans, green beans, black beans & corn, homemade french fries....

Also, get or make a North Carolina Style BBQ sauce (really the only true BBQ sauce ). It is vinegar based, spicy, and so yummy. Avoid thick sauces or if it says anything other than NC style.

Here's an easy home made recipe for NC style BBQ sauce for pork:
2 cups apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon Texas Pete's
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt

Bring to boil, lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

Collard greens or black eyed peas.

+1. Or pinto beans.

DH here agreeing that it's his issue--if he doesn't like it he should come up with something.
