it's enough to keep them from starving, but they will still be hungry. My kids order a lot of extras and gets expensive. But they are so active and burn a lot of calories...

What kind of a snack are you packing for your Ds? That will help I'm not be so famished at lunch.

I volunteer weekly in the cafeteria. It really depends on the day honestly - the day they serve spaghetti is deemed "not enough" bc the kids love it, for example, but on days where the hamburgers, for example, are served they go half eaten. Sides are the same story - carrot sticks are plentiful, but uneaten usually. Canned peaches are leave kuds wanting more.

Def a lot of waste. Sometimes it's stuff like bananas which are harder for kids (esp the little guys) to peel so they're left on the tray uneaten or other items like the milk bc, I agree, it's kinda gross.

You can set your fcps cafeteria acct to limit sides (maybe compromise and allow it 2x/week or something). Kids ebb and flow with appetite though depending on what's served, if they had an active morning (boosterthon fun run, PE, Field Day verse mellow art, music, computer lab- type days).

I've been to lunch at a school cafeteria and the lunches are not small by any means! I was shocked at how much food they gave kids... and also shocked by the 40% that goes in the trash! I remember the lunches we used to get in the 70s and 80s... and they were not nearly as big.

Go to lunch with your kid and see for yourself. I bet you'll be surprised at how much food goes on the plate, and then how much food goes into the trash. It is really heart-breaking.

If you don't think it's enough for your kid, pack the lunch yourself.

I've never understood why the portion sizes are the same for a first grader, sixth grader, and adult.

It is plenty of food for a kid. Some kids are accustomed to eating much more for a meal, based on what has been served at home, but the portion size is more than enough nutrition.

OP -- I think this is one you have to see for yourself. For some of us, the portions are quite substantial (I know they are about 50% bigger than the portions we had as kids in school), but for others they are small.

If you can stop in for lunch some day, do it! Only you can tell if it is "big" or "small."

Kids are like grown ups. Some require more than others.
