It doesn't matter if they were wearing seat belts or not. The Mercedes slammed into the other car with what was described as a "deafening boom." The back of the Acura was smashed in and the impact sent it into a telephone pole, splitting it. The driver and front passenger were ejected but it probably wouldn't have made any difference.

The Mercedes spun around and burst into flames:

Not true, seat belts keep peopel in cars, it is never the first crash that kills it is the second one that kills. The second crash is the into the dash board, windshield, or pavemnt. Sad story but a seat belt would have kept them in the car.

Oh shut up. Really?

I don't think it's racist to point out that a child is not an orphan if s/he has a father. How many fathers are affected by this tragedy? Or do they know who the fathers are? It's not an unusual question, considering this information isn't mentioned in the article and would be important points to include (survivors, etc). It's the elephant in the room.

You're complaining because the Washington Post story did not specifically discuss who the fathers were of the 8 children, including a six-month-old, whose mothers just died in a car wreck? Maybe the reporter should have said to the family, "Oh, it's so sad, now could you please show me the children's birth certificates and describe the relationship between the father and the mother for each one?"

Six WEEK old. Heartbreaking.

There is nothing wrong with discussing social issues highlighted by this tragedy. This may not be the time or the place for it though.

This is absolutely heartbreaking, I am devastated for these kids who have lost the most important person anyone can have in their lives, so young. I especially feel so sad for the 15 year old who will probably have to play the role of a mother to these kids and become an instant adult and a mother figure to all of her siblings. I can't even imagine how stressful that is, I hope their communities/families will come together and help.

Not PP but of course. Racism is everywhere but particularly thick in Internet comments. It's disgusting.

The other two children were Muslim and have already had the funeral/burials. I don't know of any fund to help their mother, who is obviously devastated, but if I find out there's something I'll post it.

I know. That's the part that stood out to me the most. All of those poor children losing a mother and sibling
