stickers or little junk from the dollar store. i think oriental trading sells a bag of mixed party favors - you could get that and let both your kids pick from it. it would probably last a few years.

JoAnn Fabrics always has a bunch of stuff for around $1. Sticker books, coloring books, random crafts, fairy cards...I always stock up for my nieces and nephews (DD is too young) when I'm there.

AC Moore has a lot of simple crafts for $1 -- like those velvet pictures that come with mini markers. You could also check out the party favor bins at Party City. Lots of trinkets to choose from. Also Oriental Trading.

charms on a charm bracelet - but they're about $5/each

the littlest my little pony

little animal figurines (again, about $3)

bracelets and necklaces - DD always loves a little bling - mardi gras beads are cheap and can get me good behavior for short periods of time (aka - if you don't whine all through the grocery store, you can have a necklace at the end)

I could always find scrapbook stickers at the K-Mart in my parents' home town or the beach Wal-Mart, so that mixed it up for her and accomplished the need of a cheap bribe / reward.

I have a boy and a girl and have wondered the same thing. Hot Wheels are a buck each. I haven't seen anything at that price point that seems like an equivalent. Luckily my 3.5 year old girl likes the Hot Wheels, though I think she would like some pink ones.

I did see some new toy animals at Target that are similar to the ones from Schleich. They are a more than a dollar, but are cute and little and might be fun for OP's DD.

Stickers? A container of bubbles or sidewalk chalk? A coloring book?

Melissa and Doug has a nice reusable sticker book that is $5 and allows kids to stick themed stickers onto a scene (e.g. stick farm animals and hay bales on the farm). It's available at Target.

We also use activities as a reward (e.g. trip to library, favorite playground, to get ice cream).

What about those Crayola Color Wonder little sets. I have seen them for 5 or 6 bucks at Target. They come with a little pad and markers. They have all characters.

OP--I have a boy and a girl and I don't know the answer. My son loves his hot wheels and matchbox cars. I've never found an equivalent but different item for my daughter. As an example, on a rainy day in OBX we ended up in walmart to pick up some groceries. My son was bored and I remembered that we hadn't packed any toys for him. So I picked up a 5 pack of cars for $5. I ended up buying my daughter some nail polish. One it was more expensive than the cars, two--it's messier than the cars but I couldn't find anything else that she wanted that had the quantity and cheapness of the cars. I wasn't going to buy 5 My Little Ponies.



Why can't you buy a few mini My Little Ponies? Works for us. The Littlest Pet Shop idea is good, too.
