Subject: Does cabinet refacing or painting really look decent?
I looked into full refacing with a company that was supposed to be very reasonable, according to friends who had gotten multiple quotes. I think they quoted us 15k? And while our kitchen isn't overly small, it definitely is not large either. My husband basically kicked the guy out of the house when he heard the number. So embarrassing.

I repainted mine dark gray and changed the hardware. Went from sad crazy looking old kitchen to stunning new kitchen. I would totally do it again.

I have seen it in homes where they had professionals do the job painstakingly with attention to detail and it still looks bad.
Just don't do it. Everyone who has it done always believes it looks better than it really does.
The previous owners of our home must have agreed with you. Instead, they took out the perfectly good solid wood cabinets and replaced them with IKEA pressboard junk, which would be extremely expensive for us to replace. I'd much prefer to have the old ones refinished.
You do realize that IKEA kitchens are consistently highly rated, right? People LOVE them and they have a 25 year transferrable warranty.

It completely changes the look of the kitchen. Many replacement cabinets we looked at aren't truly "wood" anyway, they are "furniture grade MDF" or plywood.

Lots of companies make door fronts specifically for Ikea cabinets. Check out Semihandmade and Scherrs -- you might be able to get a kitchen you love without ripping out the Ikea. Good luck.
